RANGE INFORMATION
High power shooting has been in existence at Capitan, NM since after World War II. In 1962 the range was built to its present configuration. There are 25 firing points out to 1,000 yds. In the late 1990’s an 800 and 900 yard line were added with 8 firing points each.
The Capitan Hi Power Shooting Club, Inc. sponsors an across the course league that is shot on the 4th Saturday of the month, starting in May and running through October. A match consists of 4 individual matches. 20 shots for record shot at 200 yards, in the standing position, slow fire, single shot in a time limit of 20 minutes is the first match. The second match is sitting rapid fire in which the shooter starts from the standing position, drops into the sitting position and fires 10 shots for record in 60 seconds with a reload. This is repeated for a total of 20 shots for record in the sitting position at 200 yards. The third match is shot from the 300 yard line and is shot rapid fire prone. It is similar to the sitting match, you start standing, then drop into the prone position, fire 10 shots with a reload in 70 seconds. This is done a second time for a total of 20 shots for record shot rapid fire prone. The last individual match is shot at 600 yards away from the target. It is shot from the prone position, slow fire. There are 20 shots for record and the time limit is 20 minutes. The individual matches of 20 shots each give an aggregate of 80 shots, with each shot being worth a maximum of 10 points, a perfect score would be 800 points. In most matches, a shooter is given 2 sighting shots for each stage. 2 minutes is added to the time allowed for a slow fire match and a 2 minute sighting period is given before a rapid fire match.
In the year 2006, the club is also sponsoring 3 NRA approved long range matches. These matches are shot at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards, slow fire. There are two matches, one being based on the Palma match which consists of 15 shots for record at each distance. The second match is 20 shots for record at 1,000 yards only. The Palma match is open to iron sighted rifles, shot prone and supported only by the shooter and his sling, in caliber 308/7.62 and F class rifles. F class rifles are heavy scope sighted rifles that are shot prone, off of rests. The 1,000 yard match is for any rifle/any sight shot prone and supported only by the shooter and a sling or F class rifles. These matches will be shot on the second Saturday of the months, May, June and July.
In addition to the above competitions, the Capitan Hi Power Shooting Club will host the New Mexico High Power Championship matches in July, 2006. We also sponsor a Regional match that is shot in August, 2006.
