RIGHT ON TARGET

July, 2010

We had a great turnout for the long range match held on the 10th.  Twenty three shooters showed up to face off on the nicest shooting day of the season so far.  Conditions were excellent with the wind never getting over about 10 mph and that was rare.  It did change on occasion and catch our shooters napping.  That will teach them to get comfortable!  The first match of the day was the Palma match which is shot at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards and the second match is a 1,000 yard match that allows any rifle up to35 caliber and any sight.  There are 3 different divisions that are contested; F class open, which is open for rifles of any caliber up to 35 and are shot off of a rest with a scope.  The next division is FTR which is either a 308 or 223 shot off of a bipod with a scope and bringing up the rear so to speak are the prone shooters that shoot a 308 with iron sights, prone with a sling.  No rest.  The scope shooters do have to shoot a smaller target than the iron sight shooters.   Mark Harrington from Post, Tx won the Palma match in the F class open division, Freddy Haltom from Midland, Tx. won the FTR division and Ron Zerr from El Paso, Tx. won the Palma match among the prone shooters.  In the 1,000 yard any/any match, Kenny Padilla from Carlsbad won the open division and Gerald Hancock won the FTR division.  Among the prone shooters, Ron Zerr again won, making it a clean sweep for the perennial top five shooter at nationals.  Scores to follow:

The New Mexico State High Power Championships were held July 16 thru 18.  We had a decent turnout with 34 shooters competing on Saturday.  Ron Zerr is the new state champion; Paul Kerr won the service rifle championship and is high resident.  Complete results are posted on our website (or will be very soon), www.capitanhipower.com

Due to the state championship being held the week before, turnout for the Capitan club across the course match was very low with only 4 shooters coming out and shooting.  Paul Myers was match winner with a 741-14X, Gary Shaver was second with a 737-15X, Steve Jones was third with a 727-12X and David Crider brought up the rear with a 717-14.

Well, the rainy season has started here in the mountains.  The smallbore prone match to be held Sunday the 25th was postponed due to wet weather.  Of course it’s nice to see the rain, so we won’t complain too much.  We decided to postpone the match till next Sunday morning at 8:30, August 1.  Hope you can make it out.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S SHOP

We have had a full slate of matches going this month and we had a great state championship.  I encourage you to check out the results at our website.

Here are a couple of reminders for you to file away.  The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will be using the range August 3rd, 4th and 5th.  The Ruidoso police have the range the following week, the 9th thru the 11th for police sniper school. Of course the range is closed to use for those days.

The national championships are in full swing at Camp Perry.  The pistol matches have been shot and the smallbore matches are in progress right now.  Results can be found at the NRA website and the CMP website for their respective matches.  We have club members traveling to and from and we wish them the safest possible trips and well as good performances for all.

Just a couple of gripes to get off my chest.  Please don’t drive on the firing lines, please don’t shoot the smallbore target frames with pistols or high power rifles and clean up after yourselves.  Now see, that wasn’t too bad!!

Hold hard and favor center!
