We had a great turnout for the long range match on the 12th. 20 shooters showed up to test their skills on a very difficult day. The wind stayed in the 10 to 15 mph range blowing straight downrange and fishing tailing to both sides of 6:00. Now I know that doesn’t sound too difficult, but as the day progressed the changes were happening so quickly it was next to impossible to keep up. I know, because I couldn’t! I squeaked out a win in the Palma match over the prone shooters and I am certainly not very proud of my performance. But Kenny Padilla in F class open had something figured out by beating all shooters with a very fine 434-10. Freddie Haltom won FTR class with a 406-5. In the 1,000 yard any/any match, Brian Chatwell topped the F Class open shooters with a 178-1 and Freddy Haltom again topped the FTR shooters with a 155-0. Looking at the scores you can get a good idea about how tough a day it was! Steve Jones was the only prone shooter so he both won and lost! And I won’t embarrass him by giving his score. I would like to thank John Van Marter for running the line for this match. It was a great help! Many, many thanks to all who came and shot because it is the participants that make the program go. Thanks again, very much.

The league match in Roswell was June, 19th. Jerry King files this report.
SOUTHEASTERN NM HI POWER RIFLE
LEAGUE, June 19, 2010
By Jerry King
When I arrived at the range at 6:50 A.M., it was a very beautiful morning. Dave Crider was there getting some zeroes at the 200 yd line. Shooters started showing up after 7:00 A.M. We got the targets and everything set up and then I started signing everybody up.
We had a poor
turnout. We only had 6 adult
shooters. We finish around 12:15 PM.
The weather was
great for shooting and there was a slight breeze with about a 3-5 mph wind back
at the 600 yard line. By the way, Paul
used a Match rifle, and the rest of us used a Service rifle. Notice the difference between the Match rifle
score and Service rifle scores.

We had the best turnout for the Capitan across the course league match that we have had in several years. We had 18 shooters come enjoy a nice day to shoot. It was a little breezy, but not too bad. Ron Zerr was match winner and did something I thought I would never see. Ron was shooting a barrel he had just put on and had no zeros. Between 200 and 300 yards he changed his front sight setup. His first sighter at 300 yards was a miss. Second sighter was a six. Then he proceeded to clean his first string. Damnedest thing I ever saw! I didn’t shoot awful hand very well, nothing going on call. Seems my rear iris/aperture was loose. Dang, it’s always something! I did have a pretty good 600 yards and it’s always good to finish strong. Paul Myers seems to be figuring out his new match rifle. He shot a master score and won the expert class. Ray Grado, up from El Paso was 2nd in the expert class just missing that master score. Jamie Schuster a new Air Force shooter from Holloman AFB won the combined marksman/sharpshooter class. Way to go Jamie! Dave Crider blew up the flash hider on his M1A, never seen that before and we had two new shooters from Roswell, Coy and Grant Speer. Tom Higdon came back and shot after a year and a half layoff, shot well and it was good to see him again. Again I would like to thank everyone who came and shot, when we have good turnouts, it’s easy to put on matches. Scores as follows:
1. Ron Zerr 788-31 10. Dale Barry 712-7
2. Bill Rodolph 774-16 11. Jerry King 708-7
3. Tom Higdon 766-14 12. Jamie Schuster 696-8
4. Paul Myers 753-22 13. Phil Overly 689-5
5. Ray Grado 751-15 14. Jim McLemore 668-4
6. Rick Gage 745-8 15 Daniel Castello 652-3
7. Bill Lamb 744-18 16. Grant Speer 543-0
8. Steve Jones 725-8 17. Coy Speer 450-0
9. Gary Shaver 721-8 18. David Crider dnf
The June smallbore prone league match also had a good turnout. We had nine shooters come and shoot a relaxed match on Sunday morning. We have some shooters getting more interested in this game and some newer equipment showing up on the firing line. Ron Zerr, veteran smallbore shooter, was match winner. Virginia McLemore, who shot on the USA’s Roberts team last year in England came over and shot and was 2nd. It’s good to have the experienced shooters come and help the new people. Thanks to all who came out and special thanks to Jim McLemore for scoring targets and doing stats. He may have just earned himself a permanent job! Scores as follows:
1. Ron Zerr 798-53 6. Dick Dommers 644-9
2. Virginia McLemore 796-41 7. Mike LaChance 509-1
3. Bill Rodolph 793-36 8. John Wilson 394-6
4. Paul Myers 792-44 9. J.D. Roehrig 232-0
5. Ray Grado 762-23
We had a board meeting Saturday after the match and discussed what grants etc. to put in for and really what we needed to spend money on first. It was the general consensus that we need to do the rest of the pit wall before it caves in. We had quite a bit of discussion on the matter and feel if we can get the people out to work we can get it done between the end of the regional in September and the start of long range next year. But it will take a lot of work and cooperation with the weather. Yeah right! We hope to be able to tear out the existing wall and leave plenty of berm so if we had to shoot with no wall, it would be safe. Larry Kimpell thinks we can at least get the base in and filled before long range starts if the weather is uncooperative. If worse came to worse, we could change the long range format to shooting at 600 and 1,000 yards on the small end of the range. I certainly don’t want to stop this program now that it appears to be taking off.
Attendance has sure been down in Roswell. Turnout was very low for the Alien Regional so I doubt that there will be one next year. Yes, I know it was hot, I was there, just remember that match sponsors can’t control the weather. It is very frustrating to match organizer’s to put in all the work and no one shows up. We already lost a regional in El Paso. But, attendance has been good in Capitan! Go figure! I’m sure not going to complain about that.
Lastly, I need to bitch a little. I would have thought that since we just built a new smallbore range (with 16 firing points), the appearance of 16 target frames in the target house would indicate that those frames with all the funny holes cut in them, were for smallbore. Guess I was wrong. Some of the frames now have large, pistol caliber holes in them! The smallbore shooters do enough damage without someone blowing big holes in them. Paul Myers and myself spent a lot of time building those and they are NOT for pistol shooting! Do you read me?! If you would like to build a pistol target frame to put in the target stands on the smallbore range, the pipes on the stands are on 11” centers. Make a holder for yourself and use it. Please don’t shoot up the smallbore target frames again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, enough of that. Lastly, we have a work day scheduled for July 11th to get ready for the State Championship. There are several of us who can’t make that date. We have decided to move the work day to Monday, July 5th. We need to do mowing and repair targets, get the cans ready, weed eat, etc. Please come out and help if at all possible.
The state high power championships are coming up on July 16th thru 18th. Please get your entries in before the match. It makes organizing and squadding a lot easier. That’s all for now,
Hold hard and favor center!
