RIGHT ON TARGET
May, 2010
We had a full slate of shooting events this month, so let’s get right to it and start with the long range match that was held on May 8. We had 15 shooters show for the long range match. 13 of them were F class shooters and a lot of new faces. The weather was cold and guess what, yeah breezy to say the least. Freddy Haltom of Midland won the FTR class in the plama match and Timothy Brewer from Carlsbad won the F open class in the plama match. Paul Myers from Alamogordo beat Bill Rodolph for the iron sight win in the palma match. In the 1,000 yard any/any match, there were only F class shooters. Bryan Chatwell of Midland won the open division and Freddy Haltom won the FTR. Thanks to all the shooters that came out and supported our programs, we sure do appreciate it. Special thanks to Mike Irish for coming out and running the line for the match.

We finally had great weather for the across the course match in Roswell. It was a great day to shoot. I don’t think that Bill Lamb is going to be an expert for very long. Jerry King files this report.
SOUTHEASTERN NM HI POWER RIFLE LEAGUE, May 15, 2010
By Jerry King
When I
arrived at the range at 6:55A.M., it was a very misty and overcast morning.
Shooters started showing up after 7:30 A.M.
We got the targets and everything set up and then I started signing
everybody up. By the time we started
shooting, it had stopped misting and there was no wind. It was a great morning to shoot.
We had
a fair turn out. We only had 8
shooters. We finish around 12:45 PM.
The
weather was great for shooting and there was a slight breeze with about 3-8 mph
wind back at the 600 yard line.

Well, heck! We couldn’t have two matches in a row with nice weather! The across the course match in Capitan on the 22 was marred by high winds and the scores really showed it. Awful hand was, well, AWFUL! It didn’t get much better after that although I did have a decent 600 yard match. I was match winner with a whopping 751-12. Walt Garfield won the combined high master, master, unclassified class with a 742-19 and Rick Gage won the expert class with a 711-10 after not shooting for a year and a half. It was good to see Walt and Rick on the range again. Daniel Castelo won the Marksman class with a 602-1. Daniel is one of several students from New Mexico Tech that Jim McLemore has got started coming over and shooting. Thanks go to Jerry King for coming up and running the match for us. It sure helps things go smoother when we have someone running the line. And thanks to all the shooters that came and supported the program. Scores to follow.

We held our inaugural small bore prone match on Sunday the 23rd. It was a beautiful morning to shoot. We had 5 shooters come and give the course of fire a try. Small bore prone is shot at 50 and 100 yards, all prone and all slow fire. Some matches are iron sights and some are any sights (meaning you can use a scope). We shot two, 40 shot matches for a total of 80 shots for record. This day, 40 shots at 100 yards and 40 shots at 50 yards with iron sights. I would like to thank the 5 people that came out, thanks very much for supporting the match. I was match winner and Paul Myers won the unclassified class. Scores to follow.
1. Bill Rodolph 786-31 4. J. D. Roehrig 531-2
2. Paul Myers 708-4 5. Mike LaChance 419-2
3. Dick Dommers 643-5
As you can see, we had a full schedule of events and will continue to do so throughout the summer. The first weekend of June is the Alien Regional in Roswell. Programs are available at our website. The second weekend is long range at Capitan; the third weekend is a league match at Roswell, the fourth weekend is high power league at Capitan and small bore league at Capitan. So grab a rifle and come out and shoot!
Please, if you haven’t, take a look at the schedule that is posted on our website. I have added the small bore matches and the Ruidoso police have an upcoming sniper school on June 7 thru 10. The range will be closed for those days while the police use the range.
I would again like to thank everyone who has come out to work and everyone who has come out to shoot and support the matches. We really don’t mind putting them on as long as people come and support them. Over the winter I was thinking of dropping the long range due to low turnout and look at the surprise I got this month! Way to go!
Hold hard and favor center!
