The reroofing party the second Saturday of the month was a huge success. We had a great turnout and got the target shed reroofed in one day. I would like to thank the following people: Adrian and Donna Moreley, Ron Zerr, Paul and Tammy Myers, John Dink, Hans Prinz, Toby Chandler, Jack Partridge, Jack Brabham and Steve Jones. We got a roof that won’t leak and should last a long, long time!
Since opening the store, I haven’t been able to go and shoot, Jerry King sends this report on the Roswell match.
When I arrived at the range at 6:45 A.M., the wind was about 1 mph. But by match time, it was about 1 - 2 mph. This was not a strong wind for here in Roswell. When we got back to the 600 yd line, the wind had increased to about 8 - 10 mph and it was steady. It was a very poor turn out. We had 4 shooters. The shooters shot good even with the wind and mirage at 600 yd line.
MATCH WINNER
Ben Foster 751 - 13
MATCH SCORES

2. Dave Crider 737 - 10
3. Steve Jones 713 - 9
4. Sam Brown 652 - 4
We only had 7 shooters for the Capitan match. I would like to thank Steve Jones for running things for me. We had a shooter, Tapani Ramo, all the way from Finland! So I think some of you folks from a little closer could have made it. Tapani is an associate of Virginia McLemore and Jim brought him over from Socorro to shoot. Great to have him, he shot well and it wasn’t his first hi power match. Another nice day in Capitan, but typical, with no wind to start and picking up as the day went on. Steve Jones was match winner and Jack Partridge broke 700. Scores to follow:
| 1. Steve Jones 734-11 | 5. Cody Marshall 658-5 | |
| 2. Jack Partridge 708-3 | 6. Tapani Ramo 627-3 | |
| 3. Dale Barry 693-12 | 7. Jim McLemore DNF | |
| 4. Danny White 672-9 |
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
Well, dang, that ends another shooting season. I know there were a number of us that didn’t get to shoot as much as we would have liked. I know I didn’t. We did have some highlights. We had a good turn out for the State Match. Ron Zerr placed 3rd at Nationals and good turn out for the Regional. I know there were a number of personal highs and firsts that occurred and I would like to congratulate those persons who improved, shot personal highs or had something good happen at the range! We got the pit wall finished and can now shoot on a full 25 firing points. As noted above, we also got a new roof on the target shed and now thing will stay dry in there.
The annual meeting should be the 26th of January, 2008. That is the last Saturday of the month and is the weekend before the Super Bowl and the Shot Show. I haven’t gotten a hold of the lady that schedules the building at the fairgrounds to confirm, but there has never been a conflict in the past. I will keep you posted of course. We need to elect officers for another 2 year term and I would really like to discuss some sort of incentive for work days in the future. Those are the only pressing items I can think of at the moment. There are some other items that need to be discussed and I will list those on the agenda before the meeting. The formal notice should be mailed out right after Christmas.
The Friends of the NRA had a very successful banquet last month. The head of the committee is urging me to apply for another grant. I am going to try and come up with a number for doing the necessary dirt work for the smallbore range that we discussed a couple of years ago and get an application for a grant in.
I am going to shamelessly promote myself again. I now have a gun shop in Capitan. I have about 80 guns, a little bit of most everything. I have reloading components, bullets, powder and some primers. Primers being very hard to get right now. And of course I am taking in gun work. So please keep me in mind if you need something.
John Gillis was an active hi power shooter a number of years ago and I got an email from him wanting to sell some of his stuff. Here is what he sent.
1. Palma rifle - pre-64 Winchester (five-digit serial number) rifle chambered for .308 and with stripper clip guide, Hart stainless barrel, Anschutz two-stage adjustable trigger., and a very nice match stock. Has rail, hand stop, sling and cuff. It has a Mid Tompkins front sight and can be purchased with a Redfield International rear sight. This rifle was built for Tom Gatewood and used by him in competition at Bisley. I believe that was the last time the U.S. won the Palma international competition. The barrel has about 700-800 rounds through it - I only used it for Palma matches. Asking price is $900 with the Redfield sight and $750 without.
2. Across the course and Palma rifle - built on Enfield Model 1917 action, Douglas heavy barrel, chambered for .308, Timney two-stage trigger, ISU stock with rail and adjustable buttplate. This rifle was built by John Merritt, a long-time New Mexico high power shooter who died of cancer several years ago. The rifle is fully functional but the stock needs finishing - it needs final sanding and a finish applied. It has the Mid Tompkins front sight but no rear sight unless the purchaser buys the Redfield sight above. It does have the base for the Redfield sight. It has about 250 rounds through it. The rifle is quite accurate despite its lack of "prestige" name parts. Asking price is $450 with the Redfield sight and $300 without.
Bill, I also have a large quantity of LC 7.62 military match brass, once-fired, various years but primarily '87 through '90, and 500 once-fired Palma match brass cases in Palma boxes. This was the issue ammo in 1992 when the U.S. hosted the Palma matches. I would ask .05 cents per round for the military match brass and .10 cents per round for the Palma brass.
Troy Lamb has decided to sell the match upper that I built for him a few years ago. It has a Krieger barrel and aperture sights. I think he wants about $1,200.00 dollars for it, but can’t seem to get him to call me and let me know for sure. Contact me for details on the upper. It’s in my shop.
Another club member, Bill Midkiff, brought me 500 pcs of new, primed Winchester 30-06 brass to see if anyone needed or wanted it. $150.00 for all 500 pcs or $30.00/c. He also brought a box of the old 174 gr, 30 cal match bullets. It is a box of 500. How about $50.00 for the box.
Well, I guess that wraps it up for now. Please be safe in your travels and hunts this winter and holiday season. I want to see all of you back for a great shooting season next year!

September 15, 2007 Match
When I arrived at the range at 6:45 A.M., the wind was about 3 mph. But by match time, it was about 5 - 8 mph. This was not a strong wind for here in Roswell. Now take inconsideration wind (15 - 20 mph) and a heavy mirage back at the 600 yard, it made shooting a challenge. It was a fair turn out. We had 10 shooters. The shooters shot good even with the wind and mirage. This match might help us when we shoot up at Capitan next week, as it is always windy up there.

September 22 we were in Capitan on another great day for shooting. Light, but tricky wind at 600 yards kept the day challenging. We had 12 shooters for the match, which is pretty good for this late in the year. Thanks to all who came. Tom Higdon was match winner with a 743-16. Steve Jones won the expert class and Ben Foster won the combined sharpshooter/marksman class with a very solid expert score. Tom has sure been shooting steady, getting close to that master class. Walt Garfield had an extractor break on his Tubb gun and had to withdraw. Rats! Looks as if as much as you pay for them dang things, they could be a bit more durable! Scores follow:
| 1. Tom Higdon 743-16 | 7. Jack Partridge 692-3 | |
| 2. Ben Foster 731-14 | 8. Phil Overly 672-2 | |

FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
First item on the agenda this month is to remind all that we will reroof the target shed on Saturday, October the 13th. Let’s gather about 7:30 in the morning. It sounds as if we may have a good turnout. I hope so, but I am suggesting that people plan on maybe staying until Sunday in case we need the extra time. If we don’t need the time, we could always blow some ammo down range! Bring any tools that you think we may need. Another generator could also be handy if someone has one. As I mentioned last month, I won’t be there to help out, got a new venture to run.
The shooting season is winding down; we only have the Rudy Buhling match in El Paso on the 6th and 7th of October and the club matches in October at Roswell and Capitan. Hunting seasons are firing up and I would like to ask everyone to be safe in their travels and on their hunts. Would very much like to see all of you next year.
I will be setting up the annual meeting soon and will shoot for the weekend before the Super Bowl again. I haven’t checked dates yet, but should be around the last weekend of January or the first weekend of February. It will be time to elect officers and I want to address some method of or enticement to get members to work days. Whether it is raising dues, then giving credit towards next year, requiring attendance to maintain membership status or whatever, we need a way to gain participation.
Since Friends of the NRA has given us quite a bit of money over the last several years, the board decided to sponsor a table at the years event which went of this past Saturday evening. It cost us $400.00 and we got 6 tickets which were offered to board members first, then wives/girlfriends. Myself, Sha Lene, Dan Egan, Steve Jones and Jim Dawdy and his wife attended. The turnout was the best they have ever had. I am sure a good deal of money was raised. If you haven’t ever attended an event, I would like to encourage you to do so. It is quite an experience. Half of the money raised, stays here in the area and is dished out in the form of grants. Like the one we got last year to reroof the target shed. Please consider attending next year’s event. And the committee is always looking for volunteers.
Last on the list. I will open my gun shop on Tuesday, September 25. Hours of operations will be 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday thru Friday and 9:00am to 5:00 PM on Saturdays. I will be closed on Sunday and Monday. Please drop by and see me, there will be a coffee pot.

August, 2007
The last long range match of the year was contested on August 11. We had 11 shooters for the final match. I would like to take this opportunity to thank new shooter Suzannah Clary for joining us. Suzannah is a junior and shot very well her first time. John Dink won the open class in the Palma match and won the FTR class in the any/any match. First place in the FTR class in the Palma match was Doug Morgan and Suzannah Clary won the open class in the any/any match. It is interesting to note that all shooters were F class. We didn’t have any conventional shooters. Scores to follow.

Saturday, August 18th found us shooting across the course in Roswell. Wind was light but by the time they reached 600 yards, it was tricky with heavy mirage. Turn out was poor with only 4 shooters. Come on guys, no participation equals no matches!
Match winner was Walt Garfield, with scores to follow:
1. Walt Garfield 769-10
2. Dave Crider 746-13
Jerry King 735-10
Jack Wooson 673-4
The weather was excellent the next weekend at Capitan for our annual Southwest Hi Power Rifle Regional. No rain, and except for Friday afternoon in the team match, the wind was almost nonexistent! The All Guard Team again, for the third year, was in attendance and dominated the long range match and the team match. Wesley Shumaker won the regional with a 785-21 shooting an AR15. Hi junior was Wesley Ganaway, hi woman was Hannah Kerr and Jerry King was the high senior. On leg day, Rick Gage earned his first leg points with a fine 473-9. Many congratulations to Rick. Complete results will be available on our web site in a few days.
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
I have a lot of things to talk about so I will start with news from me. I hope, if ATF gets off their buns, to have a full blown retail gun shop open about the middle of September. I will also do gunsmithing out of that location. The store is located at 320 Lincoln Ave., Capitan, New Mexico. It is on hiway 48, about 3 blocks south of Smokey Bear Ave. (hiway 380) and a block or so north of the fairgrounds. This is an exciting time for me and of course, very busy. I also hope to continue to sell metal buildings out of the store for Steel Depot. The busy part is where things are going to get sticky for me.
I will have to work on Saturdays, until I am successful enough to hire help so I can go shoot. So, you the shooters, will have to do without me on match days. I can come out and help get things going, but will be opening the store at 9:00 AM on Saturdays.
We are going to reroof the target shed the second Saturday of October. That is the 13th of the month. Let’s start between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Refer to the previous paragraph. It is going to be up to someone else to ramrod this project. I can’t be there. If you are driving up, I would figure on staying and working some on Sunday. It just depends on how many people we have show up. Bring your tools, screw guns/drills, nail bar (to take off the old roof) and anything else you may think we will need. If anyone has a shear it could be helpful. There will be at least one generator there, it has two plugs and can operate 2 tools.
We had a work day the Sunday before the regional. Again, no turnout. I, My girlfriend and Dan Egan were there. We need to think of ways to address this problem. My girlfriend Sha, has done more work for this club than a number of members and she isn’t even a member or shooter. I am very open to ideas.
Match organizers really do appreciate advance entries. It allows us to do the squadding before the match and not delay starting the day of the match. The other side of that equation is if you are registered, you are squadded, so if you aren’t going to make, just let us know. That is easy to fix and we don’t mind at all, if we know. What is tough is when you have a paid entry, you hold that slot open until the last minute, thinking/wondering if they had trouble and are going to drive thru the gate any second. We had two shooters at the regional that were registered, paid, in town and shot on Friday. They didn’t show Saturday morning. I waited until the 3 minute prep period before I made changes. That sucks and it’s rude! Please think of the organizers of matches in the future.

END OF AUGUST ISSUE
RIGHT ON TARGET
July, 2007
July 14 was going to be our last long range league match. But since the Rocky Mountain Palma Matches were the same weekend. We just had a practice match. Our last league long range match will be August 11. We started with 6 shooters and ended with 3. Milt Cumiford of Albuquerque was top gun in both matches. I hope all the long range shooters can make the August match. The firing lines at 800 and 900 yards are in much better shape.
The New Mexico State Hi Power Championships were held on the 3rd weekend of July. The weather cooperated this year and we got all matches shot. Friday morning we had two 600 yard matches. The first was an any sight match and the second, an iron sight match. Aggregate winners were: Match winner, Ron Zerr with a 396-16. First high master was Jonathon Thornton with a 392-16. First master was Gene Klein, 393-12; first Expert was Paul Myers shooting an iron sight AR15 for both matches with a 379-8. Marksman class winner was Danny White with a 327-4.
Friday afternoon was a 30 shot, 4 man team match. 10 shots each at 200 yards standing, 300 yards rapid fire prone and 600 yards slow prone. The Goober Gulch Gang consisting of Ron Zerr, Jonathon Thornton, Bill Rodolph and Walt Garfield, blew the competition away with an 1151-33.
We had 39 shooters for the Championship match on Saturday. The match went very smooth, thanks to the help of Chief Range Officer Mel Gnatkowski and Pit Officer Steven Wright. Stats were done by club secretary Dan Egan with assistance from Match Director Tammy Myers and Sha Lene Layer.
Saturday was a great day for shooting, winners are as follows: Match winner and New Mexico State Champion is Ron Zerr. Ron shoots a Tubb 2000 in 6XC and he managed to steer it to a 792-36. High New Mexico resident was Jonathon Thornton with a 782-35. State service rifle champion is Wesley Shumaker with a 768-14.
On Sunday we had 21 shooters compete in the Leg/Fun match. 12 of those shooters were Non-Distinguished allowing us to give only one 6 point leg. As it turned out, that was all that Sean Edwards needed to become distinguished. Sean won the match with a 474-11 and it gave him the necessary 30 points to "Leg out". Sean is our newest Distinguished Rifleman. Congratulations to Sean!
Saturday the 28th was the league match in Capitan. Turnout was low due to the State match being the weekend before. Still, 6 people showed up to shoot on one of the nicest days of the year. I doubt that the wind ever got over 5 – 8 mph! Scores as follows:
| 1. Bill Rodolph 773-21 | 4. Mel Gnatkowski 689-1 | |
| 2. Paul Myers 753-15 | 5. Kent Harvey 677-0 | |
| 3. Steve Jones 690-4 | 6. Jack Partridge 651-5 |
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
I would like to take this opportunity thank everyone who has pitched in and helped get the range in the excellent shape that it is in. Of course at the top of the list are Larry and Dianne Kimpell. Paul and Tammy Myers have been here a lot. Walt Garfield has moved a mountain of dirt for us. Steve Jones, Rick Gage, Sha Lene Layer, and I have been hard working labor. Jack Brabham has spent many hours mowing and carrying block. I know there are others, but my mind is blank at the moment. I would also like to take a moment and piss and moan.
We had a work day on the Sunday before the State Championship. I was the only one who showed up. With all the rain we have had, the weeds and grass are growing. They need to be cut on a regular basis. It would have been nice to have some help. I know that most of our members actually live away from this area, but at some point I would like to see you car pool and make the effort to come to a work day. I think that next year I will schedule 3 work days, one at the start of the season, one before the State Championship and one before the regional. That way, people can plan ahead. At the annual meeting we may also discuss some sort of incentive for club members to participate. Like raising the annual dues considerably then giving a discount for each work day attended. I would entertain ideas and comments along these lines.
This brings up the up coming regional. With the rain we are having, there will need to be mowing and weed cutting. Most everything else is in good shape. With my pending business venture, my time is now growing very short and valuable. I am going to need some help. Please, the Sunday before the regional, August 19th, plan to come and work.
We will also have coming up, the reroofing of the target shed project. I am thinking the first weekend of October. If you can make it then, please let me know. If the second weekend would be better, let me know. Which ever looks like a better turnout, I will schedule a work weekend for that weekend.
I am not planning any construction projects for next year. Work days next year should be limited to more routine grounds keeping, target repair and rebuild and general maintenance.
Don’t forget the long range league match on August the 11th. I really need to be out of town that day, so if there is someone that would like to volunteer to run the match, I would appreciate the help. That’s all for now, hold hard and favor center!

END OF JULY ISSUE
RIGHT ON TARGET
JUNE, 2007
We had our first NRA approved LR Black Powder Target Rifle match on Saturday June, 2. Four shooters came out Friday for practice and sight-in, two of whom had never fired the long range course before. The winds Friday were very strong sometimes requiring 30 minutes of windage to get on target. We had a great time and got two new shooters, Pete Pitts from Capitan, and Rich Gilliland from El Paso initiated into the mysteries of firing 500 plus grain trans-sonic bullets at 1000 yards.
On Saturday we had three shooters as Rich Gilliland decided that his load and rifle needed some "enhancement" before shooting his first real match. The day and the winds on Saturday were really great, much better than Friday. The range lived up to it's reputation for challenging winds, although the wind speeds were not excessive it was unusual to see more then 2 flags giving anything near similar indications.
The match winner was expert class shooter Zack Taylor from Nogales, AZ with an excellent master class score of 239-1x / 300
Second place went to new BPTR shooter Pete Pitts with a great first match score of 186-0x / 300
To help "frame" these scores, the LR BPTR National Championship usually goes to a score in the 245 to 250 / 300 range.
Next match is July 7 and we are expecting a larger turn-out.
The long range league match on June 9 was another great day. This time it started off breezy and got nicer by the last relay. We just did beat the rain that came. We had 10 shooters, a good turnout. John Dink won the open F class in the palma match and Derek Rodgers won the FTR class. Dick Vivian, recovering from a number of ailments was the high palma shooter. In the any/any match John Dink was high FTR and Steve Jones was the winner among the iron sight prone shooters. The new F class targets are proving to be very tough! Scores as follows:
| F CLASS – PALMA MATCH | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1. John Dink 439-17 | 5. Mark Mueller 404-5 | |
| 2. Andrew McCourt 433-12 | 6. Hans Prinz 404-2 | |
| 3. Stan Rodgers 411-5 | 7. Doug Morgan 397-2 | |
| 4. Derek Rodgers 410-6 |

June 16th found us shooting across the course at Roswell. When Jerry got to the range at 6:45 the wind was about 3 to 5 mph. By match time, it was 5 to 8 mph and stayed that way all day. It was a very humid day which produced a very heavy mirage. Made for a tricky day a 600.
We had a good turnout with 14 shooters, 11 adults and 3 juniors. Scores seemed to be down, the wind and mirage causing problems. This time of year the sun is always behind the targets and they are a little dark at 600 as well. Bill Rodolph was match winner, Tom Higdon won the expert class and Wesley Ganaway won the combined Marksman/sharpshooter class. Scores as follows:
| 1. Bill Rodolph 786-10 | 8. Steve Jones 692-4 | |
| 2. Adrian Morley 766-12 | 9. Phil Overly 674-6 | |
| 3. Tom Higdon 733-11 | 10. Russel Dobbs 671-6 | |
| 4. Wesley Ganaway712-5 | 11. Gary McCoy 657-4 | |
| 5. Rick Gage 705-4 | 12. Danny White 656-4 | |
| 6. John Grier 701-10 | 13. Kyle Ganaway 459-0 | |
| 7. Steve Wright 700-3 | 14 Matt Dobbs DNF |
Capitan on the 23rd was another typical Capitan day. It was very still when we started shooting with the wind eventually picking up to about 10 to 12 mph. Scores overall were a little better, but 600 got tricky and I guess caught us all. I was match winner, Tom Higdon won the expert class, and Rick Gage was second. Russel Dobbs won the combined Marksman/Sharpshooter class. We had a good turnout of 16 shooters and several of our regulars went to Raton and shot the regional. Maybe we are getting used to the high gas prices. I really appreciate everyone coming and supporting the matches. Scores as follows:
| 1. Bill Rodolph 776-20 | 9. Steve Wright 700-4 | |
| 2. Walt Garfield 752-12 | 10. Jerry King 695-6 | |
| 3. Tom Higdon 738-6 | 11. Dale Berry 685-6 | |
| 4. Rick Gage 726-10 | 12. Grant Durham 677-6 | |
| 5. Paul Myers 725-10 | 13. Ben Foster 625-2 | |
| 6. David Crider 723-12 | 14. Dan Egan 630-5 | |
| 7. Russel Dobbs 708-6 | 15 John Grier 548-7 | |
| 8. Matt Dobbs 700-8 | 16. Joe Heath DNF |
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
Work on the range is coming along. We are just about done with the renovation of the little end. Paul Myers and I installed benches at the new wall last weekend. We still have some dirt work to do and I think Walt will have a bulldozer this coming Friday. On Saturday morning, the 30th, I want to have a work day. We have a couple of yards of gravel to put on the catwalk of the new wall and if Walt gets the wall backfilled we will need to put up the number boards. With the State Championship coming up on July 20th thru 22nd, we will need to have a work day on Sunday July 15th. It will mostly consist of mowing, weed eating, getting the target shed organized etc. I know it’s an effort for people to drive, but we could sure use the help. Maybe bring the family to the mountains for a cool weekend.
I hope everyone is planning on coming to the State Championship in July and the Regional Championship in August. If you haven’t seen the range since last year, you are in for a surprise. It’s looking real good!
There is lots of shooting going on around the area as well as here and in Roswell. El Paso shoots nearly every weekend, some kind of rifle match, either at Heuco Tanks or at Ft. Bliss. Pecos had its first hi power match a couple of weeks ago and it all went well. They are planning on running a winter league, but I don’t know yet, when they will start. I will let you know when I find out. Please go and support shoots, they need you. That’s all I have for now.
Hold hard and favor center!!

MAY, 2007
Saturday, May 5, was the first ever black powder cartridge long range match. Well, anyway, it was supposed to be! The wind that day was ferocious and blew the match out. Two brave souls showed up to give it a go, Donnie Pitts and Jack Brabham. Jack shot first and couldn’t hit paper in 5 or 6 shots. Donnie was next and hit paper twice. Donnie was declared the winner and the two went home.
What a difference a week can make! From the BPC boys getting blown out to a gorgeous Capitan day for the first long range match on May 12. It was really a pretty typical day, starting off dead calm then the breeze picking up. The wind was up and down with big let offs and medium gusts. I don’t feel like wind speed ever got over 12mph and probably averaged in the 5 to 8 mph range, the constant changing caught everyone. Scores weren’t as high as I would have expected, but then again, the targets are a lot smaller now. We had a great turnout, the best we have ever had for long range with 14 shooters, several of them being new to the sport. All but 3 were F class shooters showing that interest in this discipline will be growing for a while. The new F class targets are proving to be quite challenging going back to my statement about low scores. The X ring is only 5" in diameter and the 10 ring is 10" in diameter. This is half the size of the normal LR target. With the ups and downs in wind speed that were going on, this is and will be a most challenging target.
We shot two matches on this day. One was a Palma course of fire and one was a 20 shot any/any course. F class shoots separate from the iron sight/prone boys. Palma match winner in the F class was John Dink with a 436-15X. Palma match winner for the iron sight group was Jonathon Cowen with a 422-14X. Jonathon is a new shooter to the area, lives in El Paso and is an officer in the army. He is a Hi Master with a service rifle and we look forward to seeing more of him in the months to come. In the any/any match, Andrew McCourt was F class winner with a 186-1X. Jonathon Cowen was again winner among the prone shooters with a 187-3X, out shooting the rest of the shooters with a scope on his Palma rifle! All in all, a good day was had by all. I would like to thank everyone that made the trip to Capitan. Thanks for supporting us! Scores to follow:
PALMA MATCH – F CLASS
| 1. John Dink 436-15 | 6. Cheryl Current 408-3/TD> | |

The Roswell across the course match got rained out on the 19th. We sure have had different weather for this time of year.
On May 26th, we shot the first match of the year at Capitan and shot it on the low end. There is still some dirt work to do, but we were able to use it. Sure did feel good. We now have a fully functional 25 point range. It was a very nice day after being stormy the day before. Started calm as usual and picked up to the 5 to 10 mph range as normal. Maybe gusts to 12, I don’t feel like it was ever much more than that. Ron Zerr was match winner, Larry Kimpell took the combined HM/Master class, Rick Gage won the expert class and new shooter John Paul Simmons won the combined SS/MK class. We had a total of 14 shooters and I think a good time was had by all. Scores as follows:
| 1. Ron Zerr 782-33 | 8. John Paul Simmons 731-8 | |
| 2. Larry Kimpell 774-24 | 9. Steve Jones 723-6 | |
| 3. Bill Rodolph 765-18 | 10. Steve Libby 716-10 | |
| 4. Walt Garfield 760-19 | 11. Jerry King 713-5 | |
| 5. Rick Gage 739-11 | 12. Jack Partridge 601-5 | |
| 6. David Crider 737-16 | 13. Jack Brabham 508-0 | |
| 7. Oran Woody 737-13 | 14. Dan Egan 499-0 |
After the match we discussed reroofing the target shed. It has been pretty rainy the last few months and it was the general consensus that we should wait until fall before starting the project. I am going to go ahead and purchase the materials before they go up and we will have them there at the range.
As mentioned before, we still need to do some dirt work. I am trying to get a bulldozer for Walt and we can get things in shape in short order.
This coming Saturday the black powder boys are going to try again. They are going to have a sight in/practice day on Friday, June 1, the day before the match. Please work together if you go out and shoot.
Don’t forget the State Championship is in July and the Regional in August. Programs are on our website.
That’s all I have for now, hold hard and favor center!

April, 2007
The second match of the 2007 hi power season was held at Roswell, NM. Those of us who decided to stay at home or do something else, have appeared to be the smart shooters of the bunch! April 21 was not a nice day. But in all fairness to those who decided to go shoot, more power to you! Hi power shooters never have been known to have any ………………….well you fill in the blank. I stayed at Capitan and laid block with Larry Kimpell. Not so sure how smart we were either. At any rate, by the time the shooters got back to 600 yards, they were batteling 25 mph wind. Steve Jones was match winner, Rick Gage won the expert class and Danny White did the best in the marksman/sharpshooter class. I doubt that they really want their scores posted, but what the hell, they had the guts to go do it and here are the scores:
| 1. Steve Jones 697-7 | 5. Jerry King 675-4 | |
| 2. Rick Gage 696-3 | 6. John White, Jr 615-3 | |
| 3. Dave Crider 687-7 | 7. Russel Dobbs 594-6 | |
| 4. Danny White 687-5 | 8. Matt Dobbs, Jr 581-4 |
All in all, scores were pretty close! Congrats to those who braved the wind and came out and shot!!
The next week, was our clinic at Capitan. I am going to bitch once and that’s it. We had a good turnout, but people letting me know they were coming, was a problem. I bought food for the 15 people that let me know they were coming. We had 26, which is great, but……………… Weather was better this year than last, at least it was considerably warmer. It was pretty windy, 9 to 12 mph for the most part, but late in the day it was getting close to 20! Lots of new faces, it was great to see!! If you know one of the new people that came, please forward this newsletter. Guess I am going to have to have a sign up form, so I can capture the info on the new people.
I had a surprise for the people that attended. First thing Saturday morning, a pump truck and concrete truck showed up. That’s right, we pumped the last pour of grout into the wall! I needed the help and didn’t know how else to get it. When we have had work days, turnout hasn’t been…………., well we won’t go there. We had 10 juniors, 2 brand new kids from this area that left early. I hope to see them again, you gotta learn somehow, sometime! And if I know you are coming, I can make araingments for proper rifles and equipment. We were blown out at 600 yds., on Saturday afternoon, but tried again Sunday morning. We got both relays in on Sunday morning before the rain came. Oh well, but the weather we had was real nice, the time we had. If our shooters paid attention and wrote down info in their notes, they should be within one click of their no wind zero at 600 yards.
It was really super to see the turnout that we had. I sure wasn’t expecting it. I have attached a couple of pictures of the new wall. The wall itself, is finished. We, the club and shooters who use this range, owe a great deal of gratitude to Larry Kimpell and his wife Dianne. Larry laid everyone of the 1,800 block in that wall. There were several of us who helped. But Larry handled every single one of those concrete blocks, laid and placed the mortar where it belonged, and if you look down the end of the wall, its dead straight and plumb!! Personally I am very impressed!! I sure hope that each and everyone of you, when you see Larry, shake his hand and tell him thanks. He has earned that much.
All that needs to be done now, is to get the shelves bolted in and the wall back filled. We should be able to shoot the May match on the low end of the range! Lets have a good turnout and break this range in right. It really looks good to stand on the west end of the pits, looking east and see a FULL 25 firing points ready to be used!
I am pretty sure I told you in one of the past letters, that we have been approved for a Friends of the NRA grant to re roof our target shed. If things are as in the past, we should have the check around the end of May or first of June. Some how, we need to have a shed re roofing party in June. We are so busy, we might look at waiting until fall, but the rainy season is the last part of the summer here……….. and, there is lots of shooting going on that time of the year, so I am not sure when we should try . If you have input about the way we should address re roofing, let me hear from you.
If I can find time the next few months, I hope to write a few "articles" about topics/question/discussions that seem to come up pretty regularly. Ron and I did this a few years ago in the Franklin Mountain newsletter and I would like to resurrect it. But for now, I am going to pass.
A reminder that the first Saturday of May (this coming Saturday), there will be the first ever Black Powder Cartridge Creedmore Match (long range) shot at Capitan. The second Saturday in May will be our first long range match of the league. A note to you long range shooters. You will need to make you some F class targets. I just haven’t had time to do it. Please keep this in mind.
The third Saturday in May is the league across the course shoot in Roswell and the 4th Saturday is the first shoot of the league at Capitan.
Guess that is all I can ramble about now. We have a club member, Bill Midkiff, that has an AR15 match rifle for sale. I no longer have the ad or specs, if you think you are interested, contact me and I can get you two together.
See you on the range and favor center!!

The Southeastern New Mexico Hi Power League got off to a good start on Saturday the 17th. Here is Jerry’s report.
When starting came at 8:30 A. M., it was so foggy that one could not see 100 yards. We waited until 10 A.M. to start our match. It was just a little foggy for the first relay, but when the second relay started, it was just cloudy. Outside of it being foggy, and waiting till 10 A.M. to get started, the weather was perfect.
There were 10 shooters, 9 adults and 1 junior. Everyone had a good time, for this was our first league match this year.
MATCH WINNERS
Walt Garfield; match winner: 774 - 20
Tom Higdon; Expert class winner: 741 - 13
Matt Dobbs; Sharpshooter class winner: 702 -6
Ben Foster; Marksman class winner: 726 - 13
MATCH RESULTS
1. Walt Garfield 774 - 20 6. Matt Dobbs 702 - 6
2. Tom Higdon 741 - 13 7. Sam Brown 655 - 3
3. Steve Wright 728 - 10 8. Phil Overly 654 - 4
4. Ben Foster 726 - 13 9. Gary McCoy 631 - 4
5. Steve Jones 725 - 15 10. Mike McCoy 352 - 0
We are going to have a couple of work days on Friday, March 30 and Saturday March 31. Larry thinks we can get the wall finished except for pouring grout. But we need help! I won’t be able to be there on Friday and I need 2 or 3 people there to help Larry. I will be there on Saturday and if we have enough people, we can get a lot done. Please try and be there. We will also need folks when we pour the concrete. We will probably try and pour on April 7 or 14.

February, 2007
I have had very little response to the powder/primer order. If you want powder or primers, please let me know, I will probably order around March 9.
We have been approved for a Friends of the NRA grant to reroof our target shed. Based on how long it took to go thru the channels a couple of years ago, I would say we should get the money about June, so maybe the end of June we have a reroofing party. I am thinking two good days and we should be done with it.
The club has a contract with the Upper Hondo River Soil and Water Conservation District. They are going to remove the salt cedar trees along the bank of the stream where it runs thru our property. Probably sometime in March, but I don’t have the dates yet. Of course, when they are working, shooting will be limited to 600 yards and closer. When I have firm dates, I will send out another email.
The combination to the gate will change on Thursday, March 1, if I get over there. I am also going to put a new lock on it. If the old lock is on the gate, I haven’t changed the combo yet. If there is a new brass colored lock on the gate, it has the new combination. Which is: 4198.
I have been a little slow getting the clinic info put together. I now have the announcement done and will attach it to this email. Please pass it around if you know of shooters that may be interested. We had a tremendous turnout last year and of course hope for a big one again. I don’t require pre registration, but would like to know how many people are coming so I can get close to the right amount of food and beverages.
The regional at El Paso is this coming weekend. Lets all go down and support the El Paso club. They come up and support us. Matches need attendance for the sport to continue.
We start our across the course league in Roswell next month on the 17th. I hope to see everyone there.

January 2007
On January 27, 2007, we held our annual meeting. We had 33 members present. A great time was had by all. We sold tee shirts, hats and raffle tickets for an SKS rifle. Tom Neudauer won the rifle. Jim McLemore donated a case of 12 gauge shotgun shells so we also gave away 10 boxes of shells, one box at a time. Rustic Roots catered the noontime meal again and while I didn’t eat any, it is rumored that the potatoes were excellent! Ron Zerr had two helpings of potatoes and cobbler.
We didn’t have anything major to discuss. I have minutes of the meeting that can be sent to anyone that requests a copy. We did table discussion on life memberships, the feeling being that the club just wasn’t large enough to justify life memberships and the accompanying problems. We will host the 2007 New Mexico Hi Power Championships in July and we will separate service rifle shooters from match rifle shooters in a class if there are more than 4 shooters of each. In lieu of a palma match on Friday morning, we will have 2 or 3 - 600 yard matches. I am leaning toward 2, one with iron sights and one with any sights, instead of 3 matches. Then there would be an aggregate. If you have input or thoughts, please let me hear from you.
Of course we still need to finish the little end of the pits. We also need to work on the 800 and 900 yard lines and I am looking for a large front loader that we can borrow and pay for fuel only, to do the dirt work. I may have a line on one, but if you know of such, please contact me.
Dick Dommers from the Otero Practical Shooting Association and also a member of our club was present. Dick wanted to remind us that they have reduced 50 shot matches at the Sidney Paul Gordon shooting range outside of La Luz on the second Saturday of the month. All are welcome to come and shoot. They are also holding a John C Garand match on March 10, 2007. For more information contact Dick at 505 434-8735 or check their web site: www.opshooter.org
We are going to have black powder cartridge matches this year. Member Jack Brabham will be putting these on. Here is a brief description of the Creedmoor matches.
I am going to need help this year with matches. I am sure that Jerry will need help in Roswell as well. I am also looking for a chief range officer for the State match on Saturday, July the 21st. If you would like to volunteer, or know someone who would like to, please speak up.
I would also like to remind you of the Regional match at El Paso the first weekend of March. Contact Larry Kimpell if you need a program or contact me, I can send one as well.
Let’s get started on putting together a powder and primer order. Let me know your needs and wants. Depending on the quantity we order, the price for an 8# keg of Varget should be in the neighborhood of $115.00 to $120.00. Primers run from about $90.00 per case to $120.00 depending on brand. This may be the last time I am able to do this. Larry Kimpell is also putting together a bullet order if you want to get in on it. Contact Larry.
Due to all the snow we have had, we were getting cabin fever pretty bad this last weekend. So loaded everyone and the dogs and went to El Paso on Sunday for their X-course match. Sure had a good time and the weather was pretty decent. I guess the El Paso people were feeling much the same way ‘cause they had a good turnout of 16 shooters. I keep thinking that Smokey down at Pecos is going to lets us know of their inaugural shoot very soon. I hope everyone can make it when it happens.
