The reroofing party the second Saturday of the month was a huge success. We had a great turnout and got the target shed reroofed in one day. I would like to thank the following people: Adrian and Donna Moreley, Ron Zerr, Paul and Tammy Myers, John Dink, Hans Prinz, Toby Chandler, Jack Partridge, Jack Brabham and Steve Jones. We got a roof that won’t leak and should last a long, long time!
Since opening the store, I haven’t been able to go and shoot, Jerry King sends this report on the Roswell match.
When I arrived at the range at 6:45 A.M., the wind was about 1 mph. But by match time, it was about 1 - 2 mph. This was not a strong wind for here in Roswell. When we got back to the 600 yd line, the wind had increased to about 8 - 10 mph and it was steady. It was a very poor turn out. We had 4 shooters. The shooters shot good even with the wind and mirage at 600 yd line.
MATCH WINNER
Ben Foster 751 - 13
MATCH SCORES

2. Dave Crider 737 - 10
3. Steve Jones 713 - 9
4. Sam Brown 652 - 4
We only had 7 shooters for the Capitan match. I would like to thank Steve Jones for running things for me. We had a shooter, Tapani Ramo, all the way from Finland! So I think some of you folks from a little closer could have made it. Tapani is an associate of Virginia McLemore and Jim brought him over from Socorro to shoot. Great to have him, he shot well and it wasn’t his first hi power match. Another nice day in Capitan, but typical, with no wind to start and picking up as the day went on. Steve Jones was match winner and Jack Partridge broke 700. Scores to follow:
| 1. Steve Jones 734-11 | 5. Cody Marshall 658-5 | |
| 2. Jack Partridge 708-3 | 6. Tapani Ramo 627-3 | |
| 3. Dale Barry 693-12 | 7. Jim McLemore DNF | |
| 4. Danny White 672-9 |
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
Well, dang, that ends another shooting season. I know there were a number of us that didn’t get to shoot as much as we would have liked. I know I didn’t. We did have some highlights. We had a good turn out for the State Match. Ron Zerr placed 3rd at Nationals and good turn out for the Regional. I know there were a number of personal highs and firsts that occurred and I would like to congratulate those persons who improved, shot personal highs or had something good happen at the range! We got the pit wall finished and can now shoot on a full 25 firing points. As noted above, we also got a new roof on the target shed and now thing will stay dry in there.
The annual meeting should be the 26th of January, 2008. That is the last Saturday of the month and is the weekend before the Super Bowl and the Shot Show. I haven’t gotten a hold of the lady that schedules the building at the fairgrounds to confirm, but there has never been a conflict in the past. I will keep you posted of course. We need to elect officers for another 2 year term and I would really like to discuss some sort of incentive for work days in the future. Those are the only pressing items I can think of at the moment. There are some other items that need to be discussed and I will list those on the agenda before the meeting. The formal notice should be mailed out right after Christmas.
The Friends of the NRA had a very successful banquet last month. The head of the committee is urging me to apply for another grant. I am going to try and come up with a number for doing the necessary dirt work for the smallbore range that we discussed a couple of years ago and get an application for a grant in.
I am going to shamelessly promote myself again. I now have a gun shop in Capitan. I have about 80 guns, a little bit of most everything. I have reloading components, bullets, powder and some primers. Primers being very hard to get right now. And of course I am taking in gun work. So please keep me in mind if you need something.
John Gillis was an active hi power shooter a number of years ago and I got an email from him wanting to sell some of his stuff. Here is what he sent.
1. Palma rifle - pre-64 Winchester (five-digit serial number) rifle chambered for .308 and with stripper clip guide, Hart stainless barrel, Anschutz two-stage adjustable trigger., and a very nice match stock. Has rail, hand stop, sling and cuff. It has a Mid Tompkins front sight and can be purchased with a Redfield International rear sight. This rifle was built for Tom Gatewood and used by him in competition at Bisley. I believe that was the last time the U.S. won the Palma international competition. The barrel has about 700-800 rounds through it - I only used it for Palma matches. Asking price is $900 with the Redfield sight and $750 without.
2. Across the course and Palma rifle - built on Enfield Model 1917 action, Douglas heavy barrel, chambered for .308, Timney two-stage trigger, ISU stock with rail and adjustable buttplate. This rifle was built by John Merritt, a long-time New Mexico high power shooter who died of cancer several years ago. The rifle is fully functional but the stock needs finishing - it needs final sanding and a finish applied. It has the Mid Tompkins front sight but no rear sight unless the purchaser buys the Redfield sight above. It does have the base for the Redfield sight. It has about 250 rounds through it. The rifle is quite accurate despite its lack of "prestige" name parts. Asking price is $450 with the Redfield sight and $300 without.
Bill, I also have a large quantity of LC 7.62 military match brass, once-fired, various years but primarily '87 through '90, and 500 once-fired Palma match brass cases in Palma boxes. This was the issue ammo in 1992 when the U.S. hosted the Palma matches. I would ask .05 cents per round for the military match brass and .10 cents per round for the Palma brass.
Troy Lamb has decided to sell the match upper that I built for him a few years ago. It has a Krieger barrel and aperture sights. I think he wants about $1,200.00 dollars for it, but can’t seem to get him to call me and let me know for sure. Contact me for details on the upper. It’s in my shop.
Another club member, Bill Midkiff, brought me 500 pcs of new, primed Winchester 30-06 brass to see if anyone needed or wanted it. $150.00 for all 500 pcs or $30.00/c. He also brought a box of the old 174 gr, 30 cal match bullets. It is a box of 500. How about $50.00 for the box.
Well, I guess that wraps it up for now. Please be safe in your travels and hunts this winter and holiday season. I want to see all of you back for a great shooting season next year!

September 15, 2007 Match
When I arrived at the range at 6:45 A.M., the wind was about 3 mph. But by match time, it was about 5 - 8 mph. This was not a strong wind for here in Roswell. Now take inconsideration wind (15 - 20 mph) and a heavy mirage back at the 600 yard, it made shooting a challenge. It was a fair turn out. We had 10 shooters. The shooters shot good even with the wind and mirage. This match might help us when we shoot up at Capitan next week, as it is always windy up there.

September 22 we were in Capitan on another great day for shooting. Light, but tricky wind at 600 yards kept the day challenging. We had 12 shooters for the match, which is pretty good for this late in the year. Thanks to all who came. Tom Higdon was match winner with a 743-16. Steve Jones won the expert class and Ben Foster won the combined sharpshooter/marksman class with a very solid expert score. Tom has sure been shooting steady, getting close to that master class. Walt Garfield had an extractor break on his Tubb gun and had to withdraw. Rats! Looks as if as much as you pay for them dang things, they could be a bit more durable! Scores follow:
| 1. Tom Higdon 743-16 | 7. Jack Partridge 692-3 | |
| 2. Ben Foster 731-14 | 8. Phil Overly 672-2 | |

FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
First item on the agenda this month is to remind all that we will reroof the target shed on Saturday, October the 13th. Let’s gather about 7:30 in the morning. It sounds as if we may have a good turnout. I hope so, but I am suggesting that people plan on maybe staying until Sunday in case we need the extra time. If we don’t need the time, we could always blow some ammo down range! Bring any tools that you think we may need. Another generator could also be handy if someone has one. As I mentioned last month, I won’t be there to help out, got a new venture to run.
The shooting season is winding down; we only have the Rudy Buhling match in El Paso on the 6th and 7th of October and the club matches in October at Roswell and Capitan. Hunting seasons are firing up and I would like to ask everyone to be safe in their travels and on their hunts. Would very much like to see all of you next year.
I will be setting up the annual meeting soon and will shoot for the weekend before the Super Bowl again. I haven’t checked dates yet, but should be around the last weekend of January or the first weekend of February. It will be time to elect officers and I want to address some method of or enticement to get members to work days. Whether it is raising dues, then giving credit towards next year, requiring attendance to maintain membership status or whatever, we need a way to gain participation.
Since Friends of the NRA has given us quite a bit of money over the last several years, the board decided to sponsor a table at the years event which went of this past Saturday evening. It cost us $400.00 and we got 6 tickets which were offered to board members first, then wives/girlfriends. Myself, Sha Lene, Dan Egan, Steve Jones and Jim Dawdy and his wife attended. The turnout was the best they have ever had. I am sure a good deal of money was raised. If you haven’t ever attended an event, I would like to encourage you to do so. It is quite an experience. Half of the money raised, stays here in the area and is dished out in the form of grants. Like the one we got last year to reroof the target shed. Please consider attending next year’s event. And the committee is always looking for volunteers.
Last on the list. I will open my gun shop on Tuesday, September 25. Hours of operations will be 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday thru Friday and 9:00am to 5:00 PM on Saturdays. I will be closed on Sunday and Monday. Please drop by and see me, there will be a coffee pot.

August, 2007
The last long range match of the year was contested on August 11. We had 11 shooters for the final match. I would like to take this opportunity to thank new shooter Suzannah Clary for joining us. Suzannah is a junior and shot very well her first time. John Dink won the open class in the Palma match and won the FTR class in the any/any match. First place in the FTR class in the Palma match was Doug Morgan and Suzannah Clary won the open class in the any/any match. It is interesting to note that all shooters were F class. We didn’t have any conventional shooters. Scores to follow.

Saturday, August 18th found us shooting across the course in Roswell. Wind was light but by the time they reached 600 yards, it was tricky with heavy mirage. Turn out was poor with only 4 shooters. Come on guys, no participation equals no matches!
Match winner was Walt Garfield, with scores to follow:
1. Walt Garfield 769-10
2. Dave Crider 746-13
Jerry King 735-10
Jack Wooson 673-4
The weather was excellent the next weekend at Capitan for our annual Southwest Hi Power Rifle Regional. No rain, and except for Friday afternoon in the team match, the wind was almost nonexistent! The All Guard Team again, for the third year, was in attendance and dominated the long range match and the team match. Wesley Shumaker won the regional with a 785-21 shooting an AR15. Hi junior was Wesley Ganaway, hi woman was Hannah Kerr and Jerry King was the high senior. On leg day, Rick Gage earned his first leg points with a fine 473-9. Many congratulations to Rick. Complete results will be available on our web site in a few days.
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
I have a lot of things to talk about so I will start with news from me. I hope, if ATF gets off their buns, to have a full blown retail gun shop open about the middle of September. I will also do gunsmithing out of that location. The store is located at 320 Lincoln Ave., Capitan, New Mexico. It is on hiway 48, about 3 blocks south of Smokey Bear Ave. (hiway 380) and a block or so north of the fairgrounds. This is an exciting time for me and of course, very busy. I also hope to continue to sell metal buildings out of the store for Steel Depot. The busy part is where things are going to get sticky for me.
I will have to work on Saturdays, until I am successful enough to hire help so I can go shoot. So, you the shooters, will have to do without me on match days. I can come out and help get things going, but will be opening the store at 9:00 AM on Saturdays.
We are going to reroof the target shed the second Saturday of October. That is the 13th of the month. Let’s start between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Refer to the previous paragraph. It is going to be up to someone else to ramrod this project. I can’t be there. If you are driving up, I would figure on staying and working some on Sunday. It just depends on how many people we have show up. Bring your tools, screw guns/drills, nail bar (to take off the old roof) and anything else you may think we will need. If anyone has a shear it could be helpful. There will be at least one generator there, it has two plugs and can operate 2 tools.
We had a work day the Sunday before the regional. Again, no turnout. I, My girlfriend and Dan Egan were there. We need to think of ways to address this problem. My girlfriend Sha, has done more work for this club than a number of members and she isn’t even a member or shooter. I am very open to ideas.
Match organizers really do appreciate advance entries. It allows us to do the squadding before the match and not delay starting the day of the match. The other side of that equation is if you are registered, you are squadded, so if you aren’t going to make, just let us know. That is easy to fix and we don’t mind at all, if we know. What is tough is when you have a paid entry, you hold that slot open until the last minute, thinking/wondering if they had trouble and are going to drive thru the gate any second. We had two shooters at the regional that were registered, paid, in town and shot on Friday. They didn’t show Saturday morning. I waited until the 3 minute prep period before I made changes. That sucks and it’s rude! Please think of the organizers of matches in the future.

END OF AUGUST ISSUE
RIGHT ON TARGET
July, 2007
July 14 was going to be our last long range league match. But since the Rocky Mountain Palma Matches were the same weekend. We just had a practice match. Our last league long range match will be August 11. We started with 6 shooters and ended with 3. Milt Cumiford of Albuquerque was top gun in both matches. I hope all the long range shooters can make the August match. The firing lines at 800 and 900 yards are in much better shape.
The New Mexico State Hi Power Championships were held on the 3rd weekend of July. The weather cooperated this year and we got all matches shot. Friday morning we had two 600 yard matches. The first was an any sight match and the second, an iron sight match. Aggregate winners were: Match winner, Ron Zerr with a 396-16. First high master was Jonathon Thornton with a 392-16. First master was Gene Klein, 393-12; first Expert was Paul Myers shooting an iron sight AR15 for both matches with a 379-8. Marksman class winner was Danny White with a 327-4.
Friday afternoon was a 30 shot, 4 man team match. 10 shots each at 200 yards standing, 300 yards rapid fire prone and 600 yards slow prone. The Goober Gulch Gang consisting of Ron Zerr, Jonathon Thornton, Bill Rodolph and Walt Garfield, blew the competition away with an 1151-33.
We had 39 shooters for the Championship match on Saturday. The match went very smooth, thanks to the help of Chief Range Officer Mel Gnatkowski and Pit Officer Steven Wright. Stats were done by club secretary Dan Egan with assistance from Match Director Tammy Myers and Sha Lene Layer.
Saturday was a great day for shooting, winners are as follows: Match winner and New Mexico State Champion is Ron Zerr. Ron shoots a Tubb 2000 in 6XC and he managed to steer it to a 792-36. High New Mexico resident was Jonathon Thornton with a 782-35. State service rifle champion is Wesley Shumaker with a 768-14.
On Sunday we had 21 shooters compete in the Leg/Fun match. 12 of those shooters were Non-Distinguished allowing us to give only one 6 point leg. As it turned out, that was all that Sean Edwards needed to become distinguished. Sean won the match with a 474-11 and it gave him the necessary 30 points to "Leg out". Sean is our newest Distinguished Rifleman. Congratulations to Sean!
Saturday the 28th was the league match in Capitan. Turnout was low due to the State match being the weekend before. Still, 6 people showed up to shoot on one of the nicest days of the year. I doubt that the wind ever got over 5 – 8 mph! Scores as follows:
| 1. Bill Rodolph 773-21 | 4. Mel Gnatkowski 689-1 | |
| 2. Paul Myers 753-15 | 5. Kent Harvey 677-0 | |
| 3. Steve Jones 690-4 | 6. Jack Partridge 651-5 |
FROM THE PRESIDENTS SHOP
I would like to take this opportunity thank everyone who has pitched in and helped get the range in the excellent shape that it is in. Of course at the top of the list are Larry and Dianne Kimpell. Paul and Tammy Myers have been here a lot. Walt Garfield has moved a mountain of dirt for us. Steve Jones, Rick Gage, Sha Lene Layer, and I have been hard working labor. Jack Brabham has spent many hours mowing and carrying block. I know there are others, but my mind is blank at the moment. I would also like to take a moment and piss and moan.
We had a work day on the Sunday before the State Championship. I was the only one who showed up. With all the rain we have had, the weeds and grass are growing. They need to be cut on a regular basis. It would have been nice to have some help. I know that most of our members actually live away from this area, but at some point I would like to see you car pool and make the effort to come to a work day. I think that next year I will schedule 3 work days, one at the start of the season, one before the State Championship and one before the regional. That way, people can plan ahead. At the annual meeting we may also discuss some sort of incentive for club members to participate. Like raising the annual dues considerably then giving a discount for each work day attended. I would entertain ideas and comments along these lines.
This brings up the up coming regional. With the rain we are having, there will need to be mowing and weed cutting. Most everything else is in good shape. With my pending business venture, my time is now growing very short and valuable. I am going to need some help. Please, the Sunday before the regional, August 19th, plan to come and work.
We will also have coming up, the reroofing of the target shed project. I am thinking the first weekend of October. If you can make it then, please let me know. If the second weekend would be better, let me know. Which ever looks like a better turnout, I will schedule a work weekend for that weekend.
I am not planning any construction projects for next year. Work days next year should be limited to more routine grounds keeping, target repair and rebuild and general maintenance.
Don’t forget the long range league match on August the 11th. I really need to be out of town that day, so if there is someone that would like to volunteer to run the match, I would appreciate the help. That’s all for now, hold hard and favor center!
